Yes, this sounds dark and depressing, and no, you won’t regret visiting. Formerly known as “Kaala Paani” (Black Waters), this was used by the British as a colonial prison for political prisoners. Visit the Memorial to understand the significance of the islands in India’s fight for independence. It is located at Port Blair, and is open Tuesday – Sunday from 8.45 am to 12.30 pm, and 1.30 to 5 pm. Admission costs are just Rs.10, and an extra fee of Rs.25 and Rs.100 for using cameras and video cameras respectively.
